    Got S'G' Barrel/Receiver yesterday

Couldn't believe how nice it is; serial nr 35816** is within the SG block and the barrel measures 2 with exc bright bore. Finish is like new and appears original, with barrel and rcvr a matching darkish park. Hang tag said it didn't headspace, but it headspaced nicely with an SG and Inland bolt I used to check it with.

How many of the SG nrs did S'G' use? Does anyone know the range?

My intent was to put togather a mixmaster with whatever BR I got, but this critter is way too nice to sell as a cheap mixmaster. Haven't decided yet what to do with it, but since I don't have any S'G' parts, I'm thinking of offering it for trade for another make, say, Winchester or IBM, for which I have a few parts.

PS: I haven't been able to get into the CMPicon forum since yesterday morning. It says the server is busy. Anyone else having same prob?

    I received two Rock-ola b/rs yesterday:

    1. 1.67 MM with a Rock-ola 4/43 barrel - MW ~1.5 - Bavarian Forestry Police engraved. Lightly staked rear sight dovetail. Good Headspace with both NO-GO and Field - 90-95% black finish. Two threaded holes on the left side of receiver - it is a SG b/r.

    2. 1.75 MM with an unmarked Rock-ola barrel - MW >2 < 3. Uruguay return? Did not Headspace w/ a NO-GO but good with a Field - 50-60% finish - it is a RG b/r

Considering barreled receivers at gunshows are $250 - $400 - I did well getting two for $250.

I've been getting the same message from the CMPicon servers.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

I picked up three BR's at the North Store yesterday (and I can't get in to the CMPicon forum either).

Underwood Singer (B) with Underwood barrel ME 2, pretty light finish but no pitting.

IBM AO with IBM barrel ME 2.25. Nice gray finish, serial number struck a second time in front the sight mount (pretty sure the adjustable sight obscured the original stamp during rebuild).

S'G' with Inland, ME 1.75. DAMN nice.

There was a funny one there: S'G' with a mistamp that read only AGINAW. Not a light strike; it was a very deep, that's just all it said. I'd have bought it too if the sight ring hadn't been a little mangled from removal.

Now...what the heck to do with them?? One of those projects that seemed great at the time but...oy, finding that many parts May have to trade off one or two just for the parts to build one! Pr'lly build the Underwood to round out the typewriter family.

Shavetail: good find. I like Underwoods...have a couple. Parts are relatively easy to find and don't cost an arm and leg. Metal parts are nearly all marked with simple "U".

I'm gonna sit on my S'G' awhile and post it later on the CMPicon forum when it comes up. Might find some parts to make it correct, or I can always make a mixmaster out of it. I'm just not gonna sock $5-600 in parts on top of the $125 and still have to find a stock...if one could even be found. Maybe if I didn't already have some Win, IBM, SG, & Underwoods it would be worth doing.

Ulflyer, what is the date of your barrel?

My BR is an S'G' serial 25836XX which could have been make within days (???) of yours. I got a Buffalo Arms barrel dated 9/43 which appears to be original to the receiver (proof marks). While the receiver is great shape and the MW is 3, there is a crack in the gas cylinder so I will have to replace the whole barrel assembly. Mine was reparked with a dark, almost black paint before it was stripped for salvage. I can tell because the original park shows where the front sight used to be. Its a project gun. The repark means that I won't try and make it correct. My goal is to use the receiver to build up the most accurate carbine I can. FWIW

Tired: My barrel is an Underwood, dated 8-43 with flaming bomb, and way down the barrel a "P" mark. Left side of rcvr has a "Z". Parking on both barrel and rcvr look much the same, med/darkish with hardly any scuffing anywhere..faint slide marks where band was slide off. Rear sight slot has a light punch on front and rear right edge. Can't figure the tag which said it didn't headspace as it certainly did nicely with two of my bolts using a field gauge. Finest finish of any of my 20+ carbines. Unfortunately I dont have a S'G' anything. Too nice tho, to make a mixmaster, but not sure yet what I'll do.
Could make it a long range project, picking up a part here an there. I do have some parts that I might trade/sell which would offset the cost of making it correct. Biggest issue, I think, would be finding a suitable stock & guard.
Might find some good stuff when CMPicon gets up and going again. I heard a rumor which I believe is good, that they have a lot of parts that came back from Greece. At some point they will have to turn these loose and maybe prices will become a bit more reasonable. Maybe just wishful thinking?
