    1903 #8 peep sight

While going through some 1903 peep/slides I notied that the early ones had the white line and were unmarked, than I found #5 peep, than #5 lined-out and remarked 6.

I found one peep marked #8. I used a 5/64 inch drill which went throuh the peep (the 5/64 inch is .078 inch).

My question, was there a number 8 used by the Army ? or was it made-up by some company ?

Brophy states that .05 (#5) was the original size. In Dec. '07, #4 and #6 were added. Sometime later 7,8, and 9 were added. I'm still looking for a #9, anybody got one?

I have a #9, but it's in its original NRA sales rifle.

I have several inserts that have an X over the original number and a different number stamped on them. also, I have a number 5 that is about .085 in diameter. What is the value of the inserts with the platinum line?

I have a small handful of inserts with the 5 "X'ed" out and re-stamped with an 8. Apparently the smaller sizes were considered obsolete for spare parts inventory and older ones were up-graded to the current standard for subsequent use.

While the platinum filled drifts are not rare, they are not often seen. I have not seen one on auction, by itself. In very good condition, it would be highly sought after.
