WOW I had no idea you were supposed to remove the front sight protector when shooting. For years I shot my Smith Corona 03-A3 with it on. If I still had the rifle it would still be on it. never had the least bit of trouble aquiring a sight picture with it.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. You might have been surprised at how much better you could shoot with it off though.

At first I tried shooting with it on and there's no argument that you will get a better picture, that's easier to see clearly with it off.

It was not intended to be left on, but If someone is happier with it on that's their choice.

(People watching you shoot with it on might make fun of you behind your back though)

FWIW In most photos of AEF soldiers in action in Franceicon the protector seems to be in place. I do have in my collection a photo of Gen. John J Pershing visiting the AEF Rifle and Pistol Competition held at Le Mans in May 1919. All shooters there are shooting with the cover removed. Steve McG
