Johnny Peppers : Thanks for posting the info that my 03 Springfield sporter is on the official list of SN's for the sporters made at the Arsenal. It is great to have a gun with this pedigree. I understand that this list cantains all or most the NRA sporters. Does it contain other sporter rifles that are similar but not identical to the NRA ones? My gun would appear to be an example of that. Did the Armory put checkering, special triggers, different stock designs on some of these guns? Thanks again for any comments. I can send you larger pictures of the rifle via email if that would help you see the gun better. Regards, WC

I thought that it was important to share the picture that William sent me of the scope base. This single cut-out base is often mistaken for a G&H base but it's a Noske.

A Noske mount so we can see what they looked like. This one is engraved, most were not. They are impossible to find and when you do find one it won't fit. They were individually fitted and not interchangeable.

The list only has the serial numbers of the rifles, but I believe it is still $50 for a letter from SRS which will tell you if anything extra was done to your rifle. My opinion is that it was shipped as a standard Sporter, and was upgraded later. I have a Sporter that was originally fitted with Winchester scope bases, and that is noted in the SRS letter.

After looking at some additional photos of the rifle I’ll say I know who did the work.

The rifle left Springfield as a standard NRA sporter.

It was send to Griffin & Howe in NYC who reshaped the rifle, checkered it, installed sling swivels, installed a grip cap and mounted the Noske base. The Noske mount most likely held a Hensoldt scope which had a larger rear lens than a Zeiss so the bolt handle was scalloped to clear the scope.

My 1903 Springfield Sporter: Value in upgraded configuration?

Thanks to everyone's help I now have a pretty good idea of what I have. The SN confirms that it is an NRA sporter which has been enhanced probably after it left the Armory. It was likely done by Griffin and Howe but perhaps by some other quality gunsmith. I would like to learn something about its value and the best way to sell it. In earlier posts I have described its condition with words and some pictures. To be conservative I will say its overall condition is closer to 90 percent. Do the enhancements to the rifle hurt its value versus an unaltered original or does it increase the value? What might a fair market value for the rifle be? Thanks once again for all your help. WC
