Type Of Wood
I've noticed some stocks, especially on the Plainfields, are a very light, blond colored wood. Is that birch?

Commercial Carbine Stocks..60's
If they have a real Blond look to them, probably Alder, a real clear grain, that doesn't stain very well.
Clear runs of Birch can be pretty light also, but usually give a orange hue when oiled over and tend to show a Blotchy finish with stain applied.
I have no proof, but often wonder if some may have tried making stocks from Ash.
