Narrow vs. Wide Base
When did Springfield switch to a wide base gas cylinder? Was there a transition period when both were used? I recently acquired a 1.6 million rifle (May 1943) and want to confirm whether it is "correct". Thanks.

Gap...
I don't have Duff's "red book," but his "M1 Garand Serial Numbers and Data Sheets" shows the following SA rifles:
sn 1571899, manufactured May 1943, narrow base;
sn 1860650, manufactured August 1943, wide base.
