    Hmmm... that rifle looks familiar...

Now hear this - shellac is a lousy finish for a rifle!

I agree 100%. And shellac is a very poor finish for repeated handling in oily/greasy conditions. I suspect the Russians may have used it for quick results - simply painting it on. I cannot imagine that they used the kind of method that was used on 19th century furniture - filling, smoothing, staining, feeding with - yes, you guessed right - a touch of linseed oilicon to "fire" the figuring of the wood before applying the shellac in a wearisome procedure.

I have done some shellac polishing on antique furniture, and compared with good old BLOicon, shellac is in the "look, don't touch" category.

The rifle looks exactly like one of mine too. I've done three with BLOicon, one came out with the same results as in the photo, one I stained a bit darker and the third I left "white".

I HATE the shellac but figured I'd try to keep it on the latest one that I picked up along with the M44 I have. I'd just like to get it more consistent on the 91/30.

Never have been a fan of the shellac. More trouble than it's worth. Strip with Citristrip and apply BLOicon as discussed previously. I also apply several coats of paste wax to it after the BLOicon is thoroughly dry.
