    Redfield No.66 front globe

I recently glommed this Refield #66 front globe sight. It is NIB and very similar to a Lyman 17 NXA. I didn't realize that Redfield made a sight for the 03 like this.

I would like to mount it on a Remington 03 match rifle that I have, but have a problem.

Even though this is a Remington M1903, the barrel is an 03A3 barrel. How difficult is it to put a 1903 front mounting block on an 03A3 barrel?

    Thanks

Not difficult at all, at least I didn't experience any problems in mounting an 03 front sight band on my 03A3 barrel. I have the same set up you want to do. The only difference between the front sight bands for the 03 and 03A3 is that the 03 band has the dove tail and the retaining pin hole is located at the rear of the band instead of the middle like the 03A3 band. The ID dimensions are the same, so you can drive it on the same as the 03A3 band. You can use the same key for both bands except you will have to file or cut the key to line up with the retaining pin hole in the rear of 03 band. When you remove the 03A3 band you will notice the 03A3 key has the pin groove in middle of the key, as I said you will have to file, cut, or drill this pin groove at the rear of the key to line up with pin hole in the 03 base.

Pic of 03 base with sight.

Thanks, John. The set up that you illustrate is exactly what I'm looking for.

What holds the 03A3 key in? If it comes out easily, can I replace it with an 03 key and save myself the filing?

Which rear sight do you use?

    Steve

BTW, nice avatar. In some forums my nick is "Mustang"...and not because I'm a particular fan of the Ford marque by that name.

The 03A3 key is a press fit in a milled slot and is separate of the barrel. You can stake it at each end if needed, but I just tap it in with a plastic hammer. The 03 has a spline intergral to the barrel so is not removable, at least all the ones I have seen were intergral.

Two georgeous gals, 'Betty Jane' (P51C) and my wife.

I forgot to add, if you don't want to fool around with the 03 front band just have an 03A3 band machined to accept the dove tail on the sight and use the same key with out to file or cut the key to fit the 03 band.

I used the Lyman 48S rear sight for my rifle.

Thanks, John. I appreciate the information.

A P51C..wow. You do not see many of the B or C models in airworthy condition. Is she flyable?
