Most of the time macro works well for me on every camera I have used, even older digital cameras. I always use a tripod and the delayed shutter so I'm not touching the camera when it goes off. Things really need to be still for macro photos because just the slightest movement shows up big.
Also, I use a simple desk lamp to light up the area I'm taking the photo of - digital camera like having a bright area to achieve their focus.
I took all of these with an old mid-level Sony using this method in my garage.
