what can I do with this S42/K Gew. 98 rifle?

I recently got this rifle from a family member, they know nothing about it. I see that its a Gewehr 98 that was but down and whoever or whatever did it added a weird front sight that requires you to set the iron sights to 200m to hit anything at 100 yards or less (seems like it sits too high or something)

    so my question is:

what can I do with this gun? is it worth messing with? I would like to make it have the original front sights again (if possible) and if I can put the original style stock back on it. but I dont know if its possible to do all this because it looks like it was modified by someone.

    Thanks!

It was sporterised an most likely the barrels been cut. If it were mine I would finish what was started and turn it into a nice sporter.

You need a new Gew98 barrel and new Gew98 stock. Very hard to find. I would look for a decent 98 sporter stock and just drop in the barreled receiver. I would not put too much cash into it, either.

You have a Gew 98M, which is a WW 1 Gew 98 that was rebarreled and the stock modified to K98kicon configuration in the 1934/35 time frame.
It is Not an S/42K, that is the maker of the new style rear sight. The maker & date of the rifle is on the top of the rec and from what I can see may be difficult to read.
The stock has been butchered, the bbl shortened and a civilian front sight installed. The rifle is not salvagable to restore to military configuration. It would cost more for the parts than the rifle would be worth.
Have a gunsmith put a good front sight on it and use it for a hunting rifle - that is all it is good for now.
