What "Oil" Goes Into The "Oiler"
If I wanted to be as close as possible to be historically correct to the time frame 1943-1953 what type of "oil" would I put in my M1 Rifle buttstock "olier" ?

I believe it would be the GI Oil that came in the small dark green can or was that bore cleaner I am thinking of ?? Bill Ricca could tell you for sure if he sees this post.

The Army calls it PL Special, and it's a light oil. I would just fill the oiler with a generic 'gun oil,' and call it good.

Singer sewing machine oil . A very light and clear ( not yellow tinted ) oil . Also fill your greasepots with white lubriplate .
Me ? I just use Hoppes gun oil and the later greasepots as I have hundreds of them.
