Nice catch . You had more patience than I did...plus I knew a gunsmith. I took it to him in a bag and he got it back together...and told me to NEVER bring it back in pieces again. When Remington says "no user serviceable parts inside", you really should pay attention.

    I have done a little googling and searching and have found many instances of contractors shipping parts to other contractors to fill shortages during production but haven't seen any Underwood hammers to Inland...Winchester did though according to this;

    "(Organized by year. 1942 - 1944)

-Underwood shipped approximately 16,000 Firing pins to Inland in 1942.
-Winchester shipped approximately 1,200 firing pins to Inland in 1942.
-Rock-Ola Shipped approximately 10,000 sears to Inland in 1943.
-Underwood shipped approximately 4,000 Rear (Flip sights) to Inland in 1943.
-Winchester shipped approximately 4,000 hammers to Inland in 1943.
-National Postal Meter shipped approximately 25,000 Rear (Flip sights) to Inland in 1944.
-National Postal Meter shipped approximately 1,000 Rear Sight Leafs to Inland in 1944."

I can see why this can get in your blood...history, heritage, pride and lots of detective work/mystery. I can also see the problem with all matching vs how it left the factory.

The truth is in the details. If someone like a gunshow dealer looks it over and sees one non matching part he will tell you its all wrong. If it is a restoration most experts can tell by the details.
I am far from an expert, but Inland and Saginaw are my collecting focus. My father-in-law works at the current incarnation of the SSG company. His family has had someone working there since before the war. His aunt made firing pins during the war.
I would say you have the real deal in your hands. The hammer may or may not have been changed. Sometimes transfers happened off the books, or the original could have been giving the GI problems and it was changed. Who knows??
I you haven't already please fill out a data sheet and send it to the carbine club. Also if you are interested enough to join Newsletter # 353 is the latest and greatest update on your carbine's serial number block.

NPM must have had a butt load of spare flipsights. My late IBM has a TN flip sight that I am 100% sure is original to the Carbine..

    Part # C67512 Hammer
10,000 sent to Inland on 3-3-43.
Question now........ Is this part number a Straight hammer?
Seems a bit early for a straight hammer?

I'm not sure on the part number but the first straight hammers were in late June or July. That is when Inland, Saginaw and IBM started using them. The other makers started soon after that. Charlie, If you have it check CCNL 353 it is a real good one on this block.

    Charlie,
That is 2,000 not 10,000 hammers. And I think March 1943 is pretty early for his end of year early 1944 carbine.

First post here, but I usually come here everyday. I figure I would update this post for my first one. Shortly after the original poster asked about the rifle, I contacted him about it. We went back and forth a little, but I decided that the time was not right for me to buy anything else. Fast forward to a month ago, I contacted Chuck if he had ever sold the rifle. Well, he still had it, I asked a few more questions, and we came to a price. Well, tracking information shows that it will be here on Saturday, but the FFL holder doing the transfer is closed on Saturday! So, I will be getting it on Monday. It is going to be a long weekend for me! I will post the results when its in hand, but I do not believe I will be dissapointed.

    Volvo245,

Congratulations on getting your carbine, and joining in on our forum. Since you have been viewing for awhile I'm sure you know your way around.

Looking forward to your updated comments, and a range report.
