Thanks for teaching us more Charlie. From p. 81 of "The M1 Carbine A Revolution in Gun Stocking", by Grafton H and Barbara Cook.....(picture captions)..Overton during the war......"general view of hand guard production which required 19 separate operations. This view shows two boring and chucking machines, and in the background there is an automatic shaper and a two station shaper for precision hand guard machining. Worker on right is Chuck Willet.....and then the next picture caption: Tony Janda using the Richardson FC machine which combined six operations into one on the hand guard...
"my comments now"
Now, what's happend with us in the world. These old timers took such great care making these things and then later (post war?) they were carefully re-built to include 4 rivets (as we all learned from Charlies post here). Still then later on, esp. after the war was won we have ppl burning them for scrapwood, no one cares etc. (of course except us addicts at this forum). Does anyone find this sad?!!! We live in a pop tart, microwave, throw away world now?

Type II Handguards modified to 4 Rivet
Look closely,
You'll see a vertical line ( best viewed on the top one) that would have been even with the back of the 2 Rivet retainer plate. The wood was cut back, making room for the longer Type 3, 4 Rivet plate.
Been really hot here, so this was something to do in the cool air.

Charlie,
Thanks for the education and attention to detail.
Please let me ask an additional question. Hope do these rivets compare to the original rivets on the 2-rivet handguards. Are they the same material and same quality?
