Peter, ? about serial numbering bolts.

In the course of repair where a rilfe needed a new bolt, was un numbered bolts used or were there salvaged bolts in use? I assume a salvaged bolt would have the old number ground off and the new number applied. I don't remember ever seeing a bolt with a cancelled number and new number both being visible. thanks, p.

We had boxes of bolts available to use. Mostly used but obviously new as well. We would file off or turn the numbers off in the lathe as the rear of the bolt was easily cutable. I wouldn't like to see the remains of an old number visible as it could lead to confusion.

At the big Base workshops, the re-used bolts would have been crack and hardness tested too - as they would for a FTR
