    Questions from a Neebie

    Hello and Greetings from Missouri!

I'm very new to forums and like all new recruits I'm sure I'll fall in front of everyone. I'll try and make it look good however. I had some help from painter777 and he has started me on the right path. Thanks Charlie!

First, I'm looking at a M1icon Carbine. However I cannot get any pictures as per their store policy. That part I understood. If I can get a few questions answered than I think I have found my first carbine.

The barrel has Inland div. and 2-43 stamped on it. However I couldn't see under the rear site but when I ask the dealer he thought it was underwood. I will make sure on this for sure. I would think it's also in his books with the serial number for the receiver. The serial number started with a 4XXXXXX. Sorry but I didn't write it down but I will be back in first thing Monday morning when they open.

Can this be possible as a mixed matched with a Underwood receiver and an Inland barrel with the info I have provided?

The other thing is it looked liked a J.A.O on the front barrel band. I do believe I'm right there for such a quick look. Could that be right also?

It also had I think a Type III rear site. (could have been Type II but just don't think so) The lighting was really bad in there, so I'm taking two powerful flashlights and magnifying glass when I return. I will read all weekend to get more book time in, but it seems Underwood loaned out more parts to Inland than the other way around, Is that correct? I believe I read that a week ago.

Thanks in advance for all the replies and what a great SITE to be a part of people.
I really got the fever bad on these things.
    Sincerely,
    Mic

    Mic,

Welcome to the forum. Helpful folks here. Appears you have already met Charlie.

We need a bit more information on the serial number to identify the maker. In this case at least the first four digits. There were seven makers who had serial numbers starting with 4 million. One maker twice, Quality Hardware.

    Jim

First, welcome to the forum. If you have been talking to Painter777, then you are going to REALLY need some help!!!! Just kidding, if you have been talking to Charlie, you are well on the way to getting a good start in Carbines. In fact, most the people on this board are very knowledgeable and very helpful! Charlie is the best!

Looking at your questions, I am not sure how much accurate info anyone can give you at this point. Of the 10 different manufacturers of the carbine, 6 of them had numbers with serials starting as 4,xxx,xxx including Underwood. (Underwood also manufactured their assigned blocks out of order.) Underwood also manufactured their own barrels (plus contributed to the Free Barrel Program) so it is very doubtful that an Inland barrel would be original to an Underwood receiver.

Chances are that what you found in the gun shop is a re-built mixmaster carbine. And that is ok. Rarely does anyone find a "super collectable" carbine their first purchase. Just look over the carbine closely and make your purchase decision based on the weapon's overall condition. Shooters are good to have because you will want to SHOOT at least one carbine in your (soon to be built) carbine collection. plus it gives you a chance to get "up close and person" with a carbine you can learn about.

Good luck and good hunting and remember, carbines get hungry and they like to be fed LOTS of ammuntion!!!!

Welcome to the forum, Mic. What Tired and Retired says about you will want to have a "shooter" for a Carbine is true. After years of wheeling and dealing, and a great stroke of luck, I landed an original un-messed with Inland that was very collectable. Problem was it was so nice I hate to bang it around as a shooter/plinker/trunk weapon, so I just bought a mix-master Standard Products Carbine to fill that roll.

Don't We Have A Sticky With Serial Numbers?

    Hey Mic,
You might want to copy this off to have on hand the Serial Numbers.
I found this on one of our hard working members site.
    @ The U.S. Caliber .30 Carbines - Serial Numbers

I highlighted the 4 mil blocks, Then I added the most commonly used barrels they used.
Use this as a 'General List' there is more to these receivers such as over-runs, Sub-contracted receivers... etc. Too much to get in to right now.

I hope this helps and Good Luck!
    I've sent you a PM,
    Cheers,
    Charlie

Well I'll try again and post pictures later as I just tried and they are to large for my gallery. I'm a proud papa of my first M1icon carbine. I bought it today for $475 and I think I did ok as I already put two rounds thru it and it shot very well. (Know it wasn't me but the weapon)Thought I would before the clean up started. It is indeed a Underwood with a Inland barrel 2-44. Would that be correct somewhat? The serial # is 40500XX. It does have a very small Import mark from Tn. on the under side of the barrel. It was a Italianicon with FAT/Star and 82 stamped on the stock. I'm having trouble thinking I'm going to redo in very soon. That's about all I really need to do. He had two just alike but sold the other one late Sat. after I left.

However, it didn't have a sling or oiler but I can probably get that in Tulsa this weekend at the Big show pretty easy. The metal is very nice so I'm very happy!
It has Ordinance Flame Marks in three or four places. I was surprized by that. It is a Mixer but was well taken care of that's for sure and alittle surprizing after all these years. I'll get the pictures posted and you can tell me about some parts with their markings if you would.
Thanks again everyone, guess I better get that box of cigars in the morning. Mic
