gunbroker auction. 5/45 M1

I am no expert by any means but the cartouche and stock look suspect to me. I've got an unmolested original 3.50 mil but I would never expect it to fetch $2000.00.

Thank you. Bill. I bid on the rifle but wouldn't go high enough. Then I see the guys new auction selling a 228 million receiver with a 3/44 barrel. I had a 245 mil rifle and that was dec/43 Jan 44. I guess I like to believe people are good.

A 228xxxx serial number would indicate mid Nov. 1943 BUT rifles were not assembled in strict serial number order. Also a number of receivers, having failed various inspections, were sent back for repair and may not have been returned for anywhere between 2 weeks and 3 months. By the time the receiver was barreled and built up into a completed rifle five to six months may have gone by. While the barrel would seem to late it is possible that it is original and I would not be to quick to label it a "fake" or state that the dealer / seller is "selling fakes".
Do you have the auction number ? I would like to take a look a the rifle.

JoeW. I would love your opinion too. I have been following this guys auctions for a couple of months. He always has nice looking rifles. Bill thought the one I wanted was suspect. This time he doesn't say "original" like he has in his other auctions. GB#336792402. And you are correct. I do not see anyone on here come out and directly say "fake"
So I will edit my post and remove it.

Thanks for the link Jim. I think that rifle looks pretty nice and the seller was up front in regard to the barrel.That barrel would not concern me to much but, I will admit, I would prefer a barrel that was more closely dated to the serial number, just so if I had to sell it I would not have to make excuses for it. and stated that it had a Benicia Arrsenal rebuld marking on the receiver leg. I advised him that the marking was BA4 not BA and that BA4 was a Annison rebuild. He got right back to me and thanked me for the info. He does come up with some nice rifles and I believe he is an honest dealer. That is just my opinion, I have never delt with him myself.

Joe's right, maybe the barrel matches and maybe it doesn't. We can come up with a thousand reasons why the barrel is late dated, but to some it still won't be believed.

I recently purchased a CMP documented Apr-May 1945 M1D from CMP for less money than that. It was all correct except: op rod(HRA), Trigger assy(HRA), gas plug(HRA and stock. Swapped even up on CMP forums for correct SA parts. Bought a nice NFR stock from Dupage and have as much in the rifle as that auction sale. Sold the CMP stock for a $100 (it was a DAS). Everyone was happy.

"Everyone was happy" That's really all that matters. I was not speaking of price or value. The value is whatever someone is willing to pay, and to the buyer of this rifle, it's worth what he paid. Maybe not to you or to me, but that really does not matter. I would never pay $ 1500.00 for a CMP service grade M1D but alot of people do and to them it is worth the cost. On the other hand, I might pay $ 4000.00 for a Type 2 National Match rifle with DCM sales documentation but not $ 1000.00 for a CMP documented Type 2 NM. Some will not agree and say I am nuts but so be it. What ever makes you happy.
