how much money should i spend on a patt 1907 bayonet

I have found bayonet on trademe and it doesnt look in wounderful comdition but nothing i can fix it has surface rust on it but appart from that and marks to grips it looks fine.

"Fixing" bayonets is very hard. Once you start, when do you stop and before you know it you have a nice shiny clean bayonet no one else will want. Bayonets are one of those things most people want looking old and untouched. That being said, I despise rust and will remove as much of it that I possibly can on both rifles and bayonets. I usually go no farther than that and do so in a minimal way which keeps the bayonet looking old.

With that in mind you have to decide how much you want to invest in the project. If you are patient, you can probably get a 1907 bayonet for $70 which needs no work. If you're paying anywhere near that for a rusty one, I'd pass. If it's in the $20-30 range, I'd consider it.

Yes, they pop up on ebay at that price periodically. Not always but you have to be patient. I've waited a year and a half for some bayonets I have. I set a price and just watch and wait. I think I paid about $20 for my 1907 but that was pre-ebay over 20 years ago. Average going rate seems to be between $90-$120.

Do you know the manufacturer of the 1907 bayonet? If it's a rare maker like Mole, Vickers or Chapman it might be worth a go. In the UK Wilkinson and Sanderson 1907 bayonets are selling retail for £75 to £85. New wood grips are about £7.50. World Wide Arms have spare scabbards £26++. If you can get it far £20 in might be worth a buying. Save up and buy a good one, then one day you will get some money back. I use a rough P13 bayonet for chopping back my neighbours bushes back! Then I sharpen it and put it back in the scabbard, back on the wall. But I would not do that with my mint Winchester P13 bayonet!

I'm selling a 1907 on Trade Me at the moment. No original finish. Some pitting. good scabbard. It is at the reserve of NZ$80 already and I expect 100 to 120. Lots of them around and condition is everything. At a recent auction NZ$150 was the average.

I have a pattern 07 manufactured by Vickers dated 1917 that is near perfect. I have tried for years to sell it, but there is not much of a market in the US for brit stuff. That is a shame. I will probably keep it. After doing a little research, I found out that my granddad was attached to a british unit in WWI. He was a member of the 30th division, which was issued SMLEs during the Hindenburg line smash in 1918. I think I will put it with his stuff that I have displayed. Is a Vickers manufactured 1907 a desirable one?? The grip is marked Australia on one side. It is blued on the hilt but shiny on the blade. Is that correct for this style? I know in US 1905s pre WWI that is correct. Just wondering if it was the same for across the pond. Thanks in advance.

JasonA. Vickers only produced approx 20,000 1907 bayonets. The last one I saw for sale in the UK was priced at £150. A regular Wilkinson or Sanderson 1907 sells for approx £75 to £85 with scabbard. The finish is probably correct. My 1917 made 1907 pattern bayonets have been refinished black post WW1. You tend to see polished, black or parkerised. Usually the first inch or so near the hand grip is painted black. Have you got an oil hole near the locking button?
Useless information.= Vickers at Erith and Crayford were supposed to make the P14 rifle. However due to the pressing need for Vickers machine guns. The contract was passed to Remington and Winchester in the USA. The 1907 bayonet was a pattern for the P13 bayonet for the P14 and P17 rifles. So a Vickers 1907 bayonet would sit well with a collection of US equipment.If your hand grip is Australian. Look for MA,OA or SLAZ stampings. Slaz= Slazenger the well known cricket bat manufacturers who supplied wood parts to the Lithgow factory.
