Mosin Nagant at the range

So I took my old 1939 mosin nagant out to the range a while ago and as usually, I had a blast! This old piece of history is extreamly fun to shoot. At 100 yards it was hitting dead on. It grouped at just under 2 MOA and it was quite a windy day. I wasn't quite satisfied with this. I wanted to see what this puppy could really do so I took aim at the 550 yard metal gong. The target was so small I could hardly see it! It was actually the shape of a hog but it was a very small one and only a rectangle about 1ft by 2 ft was painted and that was all i could make out at that range. I squeezed the trigger and moments later I heard the return of metal on metal. I was impressed with the accuracy of that old rifle. I actually had a better hit/miss ratio than I did with my No.4 Mk.1. I believe I hit about 11 of 20 shots and those that did miss were only by a few inches. This rifle is more accurate than I am of course. This was my first time shooting it at anything past 100 yards and only my thrid time shooting it ever so with practice the results would certainly be much more exciting.

Good to hear you had a positive day with your Nagant. I bought my son a PU sniper a few years ago and it is now a safe queen. We are off into the mountains near us tomorrow and I will take a Nagant carbine which I have had for a couple of years but never fired. Hope it is even close to the accuracy of your rifle.

I was using the old russian surplus ammunition. The metal was not refinished except for after the war. I purchased this for $80 out of a crate shipped from russia. The stock is refinished. It was an ugly color and I just couldn't get the cosmoline out so i decided to refinish it. That was before I started to collect milsurp rifles and now I want one that is 100% original but that will be a ways down the road. I'm looking at getting an m1 garand before their prices go up like they did on these nagants.

Consider yourself lucky usually MN's shoot very high @ 100yds around 12" or so.
Don't feel guilty for refinishing it that refur finish is horrible and flakes off with the slightest provocation, so does the black paint crap on the metal.

Agreed shoulda got the Garand first , they are going sky high now. Great shooting , i have 5 mosins , 2 are pu snipers , most all are dead on accurate after adjusting the front site post , and the two pu snipers are astoundingly accurate with the 43 progress scope and 44 Kazan i have them topped with. You will shock yaself with those old mosins if you tinker with the sights a tad , and polish up the inside of the reciever and bolt they feed smooth and shoot very well. I put the accurizing shim kits in my two pu mosins made a huge diff in groupings. I wont even say ill just get called a liar lol how small i can get em at 100 yrds and out. with just a little tinkering and adjusting.

oh ,and the wood work looks great , dont be ashamed of that, i hate that shellac that just peels off i have refinished a few for that very reason.if its mint looking and not peeling then yea leave it be , if its ugly as the hind end of a mangy dog as some are i say fix her up , sure not hurting it ,just stay away from the markings best as you can. That wood looks very well done.

the shim kits can be bought on ebay from a guy named rapulzemine i think it is , i got them from him off gunboards forum but he is on ebay as well , 25.00 gets you enough to do two rifles and comes with intructions on how best to use them , they make a huge diff in groups and keep the action nice and tight when firing as the two screws like to work loose on most mosins during extended fire and accuracy suffers as a result , these were developed by the russians during the war for the sniper model pu rifles, but work well in all mosins, ill try and get the link or more info on him and the kits for you . I have them in mine and it makes a world of diff. here is a pic of the shims in a finn capture stock i have, note the shims inside action part of wood ,it comes with shims for top of stock as well.

And here is the actual shim kit as made in ww2 russia , he has just copied the original design, you get recoil lug shims,action shims , all in one kit and enough to do two rifles , i use them in most all my mosins now . HE is also making a kit for the mauser rifles now as well i believe.
I will get his ebay user name and post it if you like they do work very well. If you own a mosin these are a great way to get the full acurracy potential out of a mosin nagant.
