CAB No.4

I have a 1942 matching Savage No.4 MK1 that has CAB in large letters on the bottom of the butt stock. It is right behind the receiver. There is on another forum a 1942 Savage No.4 MK1* with the same mark. Anyone?

After I looked at it again it is CAS not CAB. On another forum a gentleman said it was used by the Coast guard.

Mine also has the FR mark on the buttstock. And no issy bolt.

I have no 'dog in the fight' so it matters not to me - but - logically If the Coast Guard Auxilliary Service were going to mark their rifles would it not be more logical to mark them

CGAS, or CGA, or just CG

CAS could just as easily be "Central Authentication Services" or the "Cinema Audio Society" (and yes - both of these exist)
I wonder if sometimes we just attribute something we 'would like the marks to mean' rather than saying 'we just dont know' ?

I posted something very similar to this on the same topic on another forum yesterday. I am not an expert on the USCG, but from what I have read, it was never called the Coast Guard Auxiliary Service, it was the Coast Guard Auxiliary, so CGA or AUX would make much more sense than CAS.

I also have a couple CAS marked SMLE's (ConD II* and Mk III). From what I was told it was an early importers mark.
