That is the traditional means of detecting mines. Nothing unusual about it. Britishicon shovels in WWII were equipped to take the spike bayonet on the end for probing. Since mines can be plastic with no metal parts to detect, might be the most effective means as well.

Here is what the US Army uses. Gerber Mine Probe Set. I know I done my share of training to do it like that with an aluminum probe.

Yup, lifetime of the user...we used the older spike that had a tube handle extension. I thought it would make a better close quarters weapon.

Wow, didn't know Gerber made one of those.
If the field really needed to be mine-free, that's exactly how we did it...........one foot at a time.

Sometimes it wasn't a want basis but a need thing. One case we didn't know we were in mines until a 113 hit a mine. The crew was mostly un hurt. We had to probe in with bayonets and clear enough to extract the vehicle and crew...no mine probes, and Gerber was a baby food at the time.

I was also one of the M113 drivers when I was at the IDF "sapper" school. It was a bit disconcerting riding around right over the front of the left track while at the same time learning how to plant and set AT mines. What and where did that 113 hit?

Area of Nicosia Cyprus during the '74 war. The track hit outside right side...later in Yugoicon during '92 we had several strikes because mines were everywhere there. We were using the Germanicon Diehl track by then, and the outside end connectors set off the mine. One case it knocked the running engine off the mounts and it was free inside the compartment...the vehicle bucked up and since the driver had his chin over the hatch ring he broke his jaw. Then they learned to sit back and steer with one hand. All very lucky. Also, I don't think any of them were the big anti tank mines. That would have been different... strike under the right foot would have been different too. Something I always had in mind.
