Moving on...
... to 50 meters. In "brass monkey" temperatures.
The shots at 25 meters had made clean holes. But note that the same load at 50 meters showed that the bullet was tipping slightly. So the powder charge was increased by 2 grains - and the result was a 10X. At this point one should stop shooting and retire to the clubhouse. However, scientific load development requires more than one lucky shot, so I fired off 3 more. My fingers were now numb (I had zeroed a scope on another rifle before using the Pickelgewehr) so I called it a day.
Not quite there yet - my personal quality threshold is to have all shots within the 8 ring before wasting time and risking the target frame at 100 meters.
