    Cutoff slots?

I know that following WWI many SHTLE Mk.III rifles without their magazine cutoff plates had them fitted or refitted. I've seen it stated on other forums that a number of MK.III* rifles had a cutoff slot milled into the receiver and a plate added during the same era. Is this correct? Seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to.

Some say the MkIII* that have a slot &/or cutoff with the star barred out were ealier MkIII receivers that were used up later but this does not explain the 1918 SSA & NRF star barred MkIIIs that can be found.
