No4 Mk 1* locking Lugs

After reading through Peter's excellent information I find I am second guessing myself. So in the spirit of better understanding I have provided an image to go with my questions.

In the image below I have illustrated the locking lugs, Lug 1 locks up very well. My problem is number 2 I do not believe I am getting a solid lock. It looks like perhaps 15 to 20% max. I doubt this would be correctable on this body, but I have no problem replacing with "new" one from Marstar.

To check I thin film of grease and checked for transfer. The bolt body is used and good in all other respects. I do not know if I need lock on the forward portion of number 2, I would not think so.

You DO NOT need to lock up at the front of the small locking lug. If your bolt locks up on the shiney areas you show then that is good enough for me!

Thanks for responding Peter, I was pretty sure about the forward facing portion but it was just easier to ask and look on the dumb side rather than miss something.

I was little concerned about the the short lug the contact seemed small to me, but it is nice to get some feed back.

rgallant: The forward side of the small lug is also important- it bears on a shoulder in the body and cams back the bolt for extraction.

Just an update, finally had a chance to go out a pop a few rounds down range. It was raining some hard so accuracy was not high on my list, this was a function and brass check.

I fired 10 rounds of S&B 180 grain, checking the brass after each round for the 1st 5. Then final check of the last five after some "rapid fire"

I am happy to report that with no small amount of input and assistance from the board members here the Enfield performed flawlessly.

The brass shows a shiny area from the base of the Rim up for about 4.05mm consistently.

There appears to be some case expansion of around .05 mm in that area.

Firing pin strikes are slightly off center but consistent across all 10 cases.

Ejection was clean and flawless no stickiness, although it was a low round count.

All and all I am quite happy, I learned a lot about fitting and checking bolts on Enfields, and as I built one out spare bits a lot about how they go together.
