Why do some USGI magazines have some of those followers that do not hold the slide back and others do. I think this would of been a pain.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. The early ones didn't hold open. 30s came out with a hold open, or at least I haven't seen any without. Later some installed the hold open in 15s. I don't know if this was a military mod...

Right. Somewhere along the line some of the 15s got their followers changed I guess. Don't know if that was military sanctioned or not.

He even gave me a Plastic Universal 5 Round mag, WOW....That was nice of him, I told him thanks but wny don't you give it to one of your friends, i have plenty of the Metal ones and he said none of his friends wanted it. I know why i told him, i had one years ago and drop it and it cracked so i took it apart and the spring was like guitar wire. haha

I don't think the military ever used mags with the holdopen type follower. Commercial mags have been mfg. for so long and marked with G.I. type markings it is really hard to tell them apart. But I think that was when the hold-open follower started showing up with the commercial mags.

According to Ruth, the T18 follower was introduced and authorized on Oct 26/44. He states further that all 30 rd mags as of Apr 26/45 had these followers.
