A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. i would remove the issue scope, original rings and windage screws and replace them with a modern, sealed, nitrogen filled fixed or variable scope and a new set of Redfield Jr. or Leupold STD 1" rings for hunting and target work particularly if you expect bad weather.

Note the left windage skew will be staked in place. Leave it alone!

If you think the threads in the base are bad you might want to deal with that issue first.

    sonnyboy,

Seriously, I would leave it alone and/or get it checked by a real collector/expert before you do anything. Maybe take some close-up photos and post them here. There are some of the best experts with years and years of combined knowledge about 1903 Springfields here on this site than you can probably ever find. Most all are eager to help too.

Depending on what you have, your rifle may be worth many-times more as a collectible that if you went to Walmart and bought a brand new hunting rifle/scope from the sporting goods department or your local gun dealer if you have one there.
