Do Ping's Matter - first hand account

    Combat Infantry: A Soldier’s Story
    Donald E. Anderson
    P119

With two Garandicon rifles in each hole, there was the potential for a lot of lead going out into the jungle at a rapid rate. The problem was, if both men fired simultaneously, they would often run out of ammo at the same time. The Japs began to count the shots from the hole from their positions twenty to thirty feet away. Hearing the “ping,” they knew they just enough time to jump up and charge across the last few yards to get at us with the bayonet before we could reload new clips.

After we had been attacked and infiltrated several times, we devised a little trick.
In each Hole, one man would rapid-fire a full clip as fast as he could. His buddy would load a full clip and hold his fire. As soon as the empty clips ejected, the Japs would assume that all the weapons were empty and jump up and charge. The rest of us would open aimed fire as soon as the enemy was up and running toward us. The shocked Japaneseicon would be shot in droves, as the massed fire from all those rifles cut them down within a few seconds.

This worked for a short time until the enemy figured out what was happening.
He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.
