    No 8 rear sight

I was hoping one of you might know of a place where I can find no8 rear micrometer sights, i bougth a no8 a couple of months ago and someone somewhere along the line changed the original rear sights out for sights off a no5 so the elevation is way off I've tried asking google a couple of times where I could find them but it hasn't been much help

So if anyone of you knows where I could get my hands on them originals or reproduction it would be greatly appreciated.

Keep an eye on epay. There are usually 1-2 every week, but just your luck none right now. Usual prices there are $25-45

Even with the "proper" No 8 sights the elevation can be way off with modern ammunition.

For example, on my No 8 with low velocity .22LR, my sight settings: 50m is "25" minus 5 clicks; 75m is "25" minus 1 click; 100m is "25" plus 3 clicks. Of course I could probably make this right with a change in foresight blade, but have not bothered to do so.

The No 5 sight is actually capable of more precise adjustments than the No 8 one, which has the same "clicks" as a No 4 1300 yard sight. This might be why the previous owner swapped it out.

Er....., Max........ what you're saying isn't mathematically 'possible' surely! Having serviced, rebuilt and zeroed maybe a zillion No8 rifles in my time*, lets look at this...... Are you saying that using your rifle and ammo, at:
Shooting at 50yds, you have to set your backsight at 25 MINUS 5? Or in other words 50 MINUS 7 clicks
Shooting at 75yds you set at 25 MINUS 1 (no range on the scale anyway)
Shooting at 100yds, set the scale at 25 PLUS 3 OR in other words 100 minus MINUS 4 clicks.

I'd go so far at to suggest that while you do say you are using low velocity ammo, I don't think that your calculations are a basis to suggest that the backsight calibrations are or could be suspect. If they were, then why would we train people/use the rifle at these ranges. Or even use the H on indoor harmonisatioin targets. There would be no point.

You have a point but it's based on fuzzy logic and not a fault with the sight. And how is the No5 sight more capable of finer adjustment........? Just the Armourer in me thinking out aloud

*In fact I'm doing 8 of my sons old school CCF No8's next Thurs and Friday!

If you want to use the "proper" ammo, the closest you'll get is Eley Club. I'm pretty sure that the latest stuff supplied by Eley was just re-packaged "Club".

You're right Harry. The stuff issued is Eley club with an ADAC label stuck over the top. It seems to perform exactly (?) to the sight graduations in my time and my sons school still use the H mark = 21" high (or is it 28") shooting at the landscape military training/observation/fire control targets. I'll check next Friday when I range test them all and have an hour or so's plinking fun at someone elses expense too!

Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying my rifle, with its current sights, does with the ammo I use (CCI Standard Velocity; Eley Club is hellish expensive here, and doesn't group worth a damn in my rifle - I tried a range of brands in a systematic fashion to find the one which worked best for me).

I'm not claiming that I think there is a problem with the sights as such - I believe that I could get things "right" by changing the front sight blade. This is more along the lines of the often encountered situation where the graduations on 303 rifle sights do not match modern ammunition which does not have Mk 7 Ball ballistics.

All of the 800 yard sights which I have will move the sight leaf approximately half as much per click as the leaf on a No 4 / No 8 sight does. (.00425" vs .008") It seems to me therefore that for a given sight radius the point of aim is moved only about half as much per click - hence my comment about it being more precise.
