Seems like I've seen this on a site called "Pintrest".
It was listed in a few pics from the Italian Campaign.
I blew the pic up without waking him...looks like he lost his buttplate for the carbine...I'd still have it though. Belt and contents too.

"Without waking him"! Thanks Jim, that was a good laugh

"We're surrounded, that simplifies our problem!"
You could slide that steel pot way down your neck and your head would just hang there in the webbing, actually pretty comfortable way to nap.
A great photo of combat fatigue. Only after sleepless night after sleepless night could a soldier fall asleep in mid-day on a pile of rocks -- some mattress! Even a gun blast wouldn't wake this guy. Hope he got a good sleep and made it through the war. What is the insignia on his helmet?
Looks like a 2Lt bar to me.

Yep, a '90-day wonder'. "Yestiday I couldn't even spell Lootenunt, now I are one". Just kidding. In fact, that Looie looks to be a little older. Could even be a battlefield commision.
That was sort of my though. Thus the ability to sleep. A kid might not quite be so calm...if that's the right way to put it.
