    2 Groove 1903 Barrels

Did Remington (or anybody) make replacement 2-groove barrels for the 1903? I know they did for the A3, I have one on a Smith Corona; and that those would fit the 1903 receiver. A friend had a model 1917 with a 2-groove RH twist barrel--I don't recall whether it was stamped RA.

    Nope - if it is a two-groove it is a 1903A3.

    Barrel

You have asked two questions. There are no 2 groove M1903 barrels made by an arsenal. You will infrequently find the odd M1903 with a 2 groove barrel made up today by a gunsmith. Not common, but they are out there. Now, yes to the M1917 question. JA marked 2 groove barrels are fairly common. Johnson Automatics was given a large M1917 barrel contract during WWII. So these is seen and well known.

  6. Thank You to Calif-Steve For This Useful Post:

Thanks for the clarification, Steve, I should have mentioned the two-groove M1917 barrels.

Coincidentally you mentioned there are 1903's with 2 groove barrels out there. 2 weeks ago I picked up a barreled action 1903 ser.# 1,519,544 with a RA 12-43 2 groove barrel on it. The receiver had a #48 Lyman mounted to it and the barrel had the globe sight. Although the barrel was in mint condition in & out I pulled it as I have a 03 Criterian being shipped to me. The bolt is a N.S. and probably the original. Bought the barreled action at a garage sale for $180.

As M1903A3 barrels were (and are) relatively common and cheap, a number of M1903s had them installed. However, the work is always "post-military" - M1903A3s were not used on M1903s when they were used by the U.S. military.
