A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. If it has a 6 digit serial number, it has been refitted with many later parts. If it's 7 digit, then the barrel date looks too early to me. - Bob

It must be 6 digits because when I looked up the serial number manufacture date range, it matched the date stamped on the barrel. I think it has been fitted with later parts during a rebuild.

I don't think the barrel and receiver have been re-finished on this one.

Most likely it was rebuilt at least once by the government and then given to whatever country. All the countries AFAIK used U.S. parts for maintenance. Some of those countries also did refinishing/restocking. Its important on any new-to-you surplus arm to carefully inspect and gauge it for safe operation.

What's the "PI" mark on the inside of the op rod? My Underwood also has this mark in the same place.

Made by Packard for Inland. That's a later operating slide. I also see the later Type 5 Inland trigger housing with the vertical logo and the hole on the left side. - Bob

The trigger housing has been through at least one rebuild as it has the oil hole drilled in it.
