I stand corrected. I must have picked a faulty manufacturing table, indeed and I noted a discrepancy with my barrel being stamped 4-43 (I came to think that the receiver could have been made 1st. and held in inventory before being barreled).

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Only a relative handful of M1903A3s were made in late 1942. If the website is the one I think, they list ALL M1903A3s as "1942" and ALL Remington M1903s as "1941". Both wrong.

I seem to remember, way back in the DCM days, they sold M1903s and M1903A3s in two grades with prices to suit. The "SS" marked ones were serviceable sales, and the "US" marked ones were unserviceable sales. These rifles had been inspected and so graded by the U.S. Army depot. Latter DCM sales of unserviceable, unclassified rifles meant they had not been classified, but were deemed safe to fire live ammo. The rifles were un-marked.
    I have a "US" marked stock, on a M1903A3.

Two questions for those with long memories (that excludes me unless I go look it up):

    1. Is there a tendency for the 'US' and 'SS' marked rifles to also include the 'OG' stamp?

    2. Are M1917s commonly found with 'US' and 'SS' stamps?

With the SS on the stock that might explain why there is no cross cannon acceptance cartouche on the stocks of the ones I've seen, they were not put into service?
