Training Rifle Questions

I know these were cobbled together from many different things but without digging out my Type 38 and disassembling it, will a Type 38 stock fit on a Type 30 barreled receiver? Receiver is marked "Blank Firing Rifle", has a smooth bore and a complete bolt with hook safety. Lot of surface rust I'm working on. Would like to complete it as a display piece. Want it correct as possible without breaking the bank. 38 stocks are fairly easy to come by and reasonably priced.

The answer to the question no one could answer is no. They are not interchangeable. That being said, I believe a 38 stock could be modified to accept the 30 receiver with some inletting and filling. Filling would be required behind the tang and most likely on the trigger guard. I dug out my 38 to compare.

the answer is a little more in depth than that. these were not cobbled together, so you are probably thinking of later made training rifles. the type 30 training rifles are standard issue type 30 rifles that were removed from service and wiped of imperial markings. they were then re-stamped with training rifle markings and put back into service with school and military training facilities. They take all standard type 30 parts, and while some parts can be interchanged with the type 38, the stocks cannot be. MAJOR inletting and modifications would need to be completed before you could fit a type 30 action into a type 38 stock. all the while you are destroying a functional stock to put on a blank firing training rifle with little to no value. if you are looking to get it as close to original, wait for a cruddy type 30 stock to surface and use that. either way you go, you will more than likely have more into it than it will be worth, but you should get a good understanding of the type 30 while you are working on your project!

Two weeks ago I'd never even seen a Type 30 rifle of any type. Then found the barreled action of the training rifle and today I snagged a real one at auction. Photos in a new thread to follow shortly. Rifle has a nice bore although a rather unique looking rifling. I do not believe the bolt matches but the other numbers appear to match each other but not the serial which is normal. I have not taken it apart. Does not seem to have any active rust and no major pitting to speak of. Has a nice brass tipped cleaning rod. So I don't think I'll proceed further with the training rifle restoration unless something falls into my lap.
