It will be interesting to see what happens if HS2 (London to Birmingham high speed rail link) does indeed go ahead...............Birmingham's historic proof house is directly in its way! Presumably there may be money offered for new premises....or will there? We might go down to ONE proof house for the whole UK!

It's essentially a monopoly anyway. (US law does not require 100% market share for a company to be dominant.)
In my opinion, the Proof Houses are long past a need for reform. They use antiquated methods and are apparently not open to challenge - if challenged they simply make it up as they go along.

One wonders why we still need proof in an age when much more sophisticated goods are covered by conventional consumer legislation.

Not the dreaded L1A1 head space "complete non issue", what a nightmare that's one been with the London Proof House!

I don't understand why CHS is a matter for the proof house. Or indeed where this authority comes from. I wonder what spec they use? Unit, Field or Base/Factory CHS spec? Who certifies their gauges annually. I wonder what CHS they use for the Indian 762 SMLE for instance. Or what about the L96.

I don't know what measurement spec they (LPH) use on L1A1's Peter, I do know its ridiculously bloody tight though! As to who certifies the gauges annually .. guessing nobody does, isn't this sort of thing covered by the weights and measures act??
As a Government owned outfit though, they can and do tell everyone to sod off and do as they please!
