    Twenty buck rifle

    Here's the tag:

I just gave him the 20 and took it home. So, what do I have and what am I missing?

I'll probably never shoot it, but I'd like to at least make it whole.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. It's a type 38 rifle, missing barrel bands and upper hand guard. You don't show the complete rifle so hard to say beyond that. Stock is cracked so I'd seriously investigate that before attempting to fire. Also missing the dust cover but most are.

Skip. I'm looking at the 3rd picture--is that a big crack in the receiver or just a hair laying by the type 38 marking? I'm hoping it's just a hair. Anyway a good find for the money! Salt Flat

That's a hair on the receiver, but the stock is cracked at the wrist. Is there a source for barrel bands and an upper handguard?

It's an Arisakaicon Type 38 rifle, calibre 6.5mm Arisaka. Part of the guns surrendered to Allied forces at the end of WWII (No Chrysanthemum marking on the action; these were ground off as they denoted the Emperor's property and obviously the Emperor's property could not be surrendered to the enemy!)

Personally I'd be wary of firing it because of the cracked stock, although the Arisaka action is incredibly strong.
