Why not leave it as it originally left 30 plus years of service? It's not going to enhance its value, and its how your father carried it in service.

I'd leave it also, I don't understand what you're trying to do? Return it to original? It IS original... You'd still need to completely strip and photo it so these can tell you what's original and what was changed...maybe.
