Thank you for you replies and explanations. I would imagine using a bayonet in a knife fight would be a difficult task, so I can understand why it may have been shortened in the field. It sounds like it might have a bit of history attached.
I think it might be a serial number that you can see - some of the numbers are difficult to make out even when up close.

On the other hand, it probably just failed the bend-box test, bent beyond the limit of elasticity permitted. Not repairable so sent to the scrap bin where someone took it to use as something else. Happened to hundreds of them I expect. It did in our service!

these aren't official, the Australians only cut down 1907's for th eowen and they are a lot shorter. the high gloss finish isn't Auustralian either, only the Indians did that and these are too long for their use as well

I understood mine to be Indian as well. It had the original finish though...

This dealer has several of these cut-down 1907 bayos which are described as "officially converted". Is anyone able to shed any further light on these so called "No6 bayonets", please? Were they intended for the Owen smg, originally, or were they for something else? Thanks.

Definitely NOT an Owen bayonet and doubtful if it is a No 6 either, someone Bubba'd it/them.

Much shorter too. I had one for years that was cut very short and marked to South Africa...and have no proof of either as it sold years ago. It had a very sharp spear point...
