Giant Size Mess Tin
Another recent purchase is this giant size mess tin which I believe to be ex French army. One would assume that it is intended to cater for a number of soldiers or a single soldier with an exceptionally large appetite.

Yes, French...WW2 type issue. The thing on the top sticking out is for a wooden handle. Section kit, about 5 L.

Thanks Jim. I will take another pic with a "normal size" mess tin next to it, to give a better sense of size.

Does anyone know if these giant mess tins were intended to be carried by an individual, for the section, or would they have been carried in a vehicle, please? Thanks.

I have one and used it until recently as you can get two boil in the bag meals in them and enough water for a mug of tea afterwards.

"...an exceptionally large appetite..." Wouldn't be permitted. snicker.
That monster wouldn't be for the PBI. Even a section wouldn't carry something that big. Most likely a unit 'mess' thing. Chances are the thing is civilian 'camping' kit.
Spelling and Grammar count!
