    L42A1 Transit Chest Markings Help

    I have recently acquired an L42 and have been able to make out some of the markings on the chest under the paint but I don't know what they mean. The rifle is numbered to the chest on the usual sticker.

    I have attached some photos with written notes on what I could see under the paint it would be great to get some insight on what they mean!

    1 Irish Guards ( the T is probably an I) = 1st Battalion Irish Guards
    GDSM = Guardsman - a rank - private soldier
    Kincaid = his surname/family name
    12 = Could be anything, perhaps L42 number 12 in the Armoury

    1 COY = 1st Company

    2CG = 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards. (obviously the rifle moved between regiments at some point)
    1 COY = 1 st Company

    LONDON/74 = London District (where they were based when they had the rifle. 74 is probably the numerical code for London District)

    Jacob interesting L42 chest looks very much like a number of 2CG chests I’ve seen, with the yellow paint and other markings. Here’s a link to one shown recently…

    I have an 1 Irish Guard’s L42 chest and it’s not similar to the markings shown as 1IG, although I have not seen many others.

    SP would possibly suggest Support Company

    Absolutely right, SP would be the Military abbreviation for Support Company.
