Probably how I felt Jim when shooting my mates 460 Weatherby Magnum with 500Gn projies at 2,500Fps on the 3rd round I fired I left my mouth shut.
I can honestly say I tasted enamel from my teeth, I also bench rested it with 1 round so I can say I've done it without a dead sled, that was not much fun!
But my mates tougher than me he went through 19 rounds off the bench rest!
In the semi enclosed shooting area that thing brought every bit of dust down that was there and fairly resonated in the tin when fired, but even with a dead mule in the stock and a custom stock you gotta hang onto it and prepare yourself for the event!
Here is an earlier pic of me (Circa 2006) firing the 460WM at our range the rifle is in its original MkV Weatherby stock with no dead mule;
Things to note are the aspect of the rifles recoil from the horizontal as I'm letting it push me back, my left foot is just starting to lift as I take all the recoil.
I can say that to shoot it with that stock was a really nasty affair until Gavin had a $2000 custom stock & dead mule put together by Ken Davis of Perth Master Stock Maker mind you it was still nasty but at least you could do 2-3 rounds without to much concussion!
Just hand these folks a 1903A3 and a dozen clips of 5. It seems not so bad until about the third clip and then it becomes annoying. At 10 you hate it and are all over the place with the shots.
I used to do my mule deer hunting with a box stock byf 44 98K "Kreigsmodel". It was a great, powerful smooth rifle. People would ask me why I used that thing. I'd just drop it into the mud and pick it up and walk away. Some got it, most didn't. For some reason, it just didn't kick like the Springfield. Maybe the plywood stock or the few extra pounds.It was very accurate.
Talking about a little 'Recoil Bite' if any have time read this short yahoo article about this Russian, there is a short video in it you can watch.
I'm attaching the youtube video this same guy did. It's in Russian and he's comparing different launchers. Cut to the 20:00 minute mark to start and enjoy the next few minutes.
His comment after the Incident is: "Ah, f@ck … you bastard thing!"
Then when filming resumes as he's standing in front of the tank he say's: "This is why I keep saying that NATO provides shitty ammunition."
Good shooting to hit the towing point and totally wreck the AT warheads efforts to defeat the armour in fact I think a tank would be fairly safe from him!
His Rt eye would look pretty black over the next few days.........
