Underwood E-Series At Local Gun Show

Saw an interesting one today: An Underwood E-Series Presentation Carbine at a small local gun show in rural Maine.

The only markings I could find in a quick examination in poor light were:
    Front Receiver:
    U.S. CARBINE
    CAL .30 M1icon

    Rear Receiver:
    UNDERWOOD
    E2XX
    (No Firing Proof Mark)

    Rear Sight:
    S on the left side.

    Sling Well:
P-U (could have been PU, I didn't write it down).

That was it--nothing else visible on stock, barrel or other visible pieces. It had all early features (flip sight, push safety, flat bolt, type 1 barrel band, high wood stock, etc.). The rear sight looked funky, like it was slightly off-center. Looked like it had been fired a bit (typical wear on bolt lugs and the right side of the receiver), but was overall in really really mint-ey condition.

I was interested EXCEPT it was $2,800 (out of my range), and the left side of the receiver had 4 holes that had been drilled into it and looked like they were tapped. The stock had been somewhat crudely milled out by the holes in the receiver, presumably to accommodate a scope mount.

I had read about the E-series before but never expected to run into one about 8 miles from my house.

We had a thread about the "E" series here a while back. Offered as special gifts weren't they?

Nice touch, made a fine hunting rifle I guess. $2800? Sure thing.

    Here's one that wasn't D&T for hunting... https://www.rockislandauction.com/de...tic-m1-carbine

Thought it might be, the odds of two like your description are too high.

    Updated!!

Not to bump my own thread, but thought I would share an update.

I saw the same gun at a local show today, price reduced down to $1,700. Someone else bought it. Nice rifle, I might have been tempted if not for the holes in the receiver and the stock modification.
