Looks like it was buddy's little collection of Japaneseicon trophies: the axe, the gas masks, the rubber shoes, "thongs" as we would call them, shell, entrenching tool etc.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. "An RNZAF sawmill worker poses with captured Japaneseicon military souvenirs. Possibly Arundel Island or Guadalcanal , 1943
Items in view include a rifle, bayonet, helmet, gas masks, toed sandals (tabi) and ammo belts.

Here's a couple of links to some info on the RNZAF Sawmill Units....if anyone is lucky enough to have an N^Z marked Remington M1903, these were some of the boys who were using them overseas in WW2.

I've got Bubba on my mind....I've had 3 victims of Bubba cross my bench in the last couple of months. I would thank him for the business but I don't charge for my services.
