What's he expecting the solders to do, everyone take a "slurp" or does he think that they all carry a wine glass in their kit?

I think it's like a bottoms up thing. Like in Yugoicon, the villagers would show up with rakije and offer a water glass to passing patrols. Stuff was not for the young...

OK I give up! What is the pouch hanging off the guy on the right?
Also look like rifle grenade tube sticking out of his backpack.
Bolt action rifle carried by the guy on the left............
Guy on the left has different items hanging off his belt also!

Bolt actions were issued commonly until grenade launchers came available for the M1icon and different jobs TO&E demanded different weapons. This allowed front line troops to carry front line rifles. The gear issued with a bolt action would be different to some degree.
