Range find

Out shooting .22 last Friday and I was alone on the range, which is normal here. I happened to look at the ground in front of the firing point and found a loaded cartridge that really shouldn't have been there. Also, nine others, empty. Have a look and tell me what they are? By the way I already gave one empty away to a friend.

One of your neighbours is either a true eccentric or owns a VG1 or STG.

I remember making a whole bunch of brass cases from 7.62 NATO brass, several decades ago. Then there was / is the local bloke who makes full-length 7.92 x 33 BLANKS for his Movie armoury StGs (x2 at last count).

You are correct sir...in all statements. I found since I had a brand new one in my collection already but the thing is these have been long sequestered in this country. Hard to guess which exact one it is but they have been out going through just a few. This was between last Friday and the week before or I would have found it then. Once before I found a trials cartridge from when the FNs were being tested. That came home too.

I had the opportunity many years ago to make a batch of 600rds 7.92x33K for a shooter that had an Mp44. I used Federal once fired .308 and sized, cut and inside chamfered...trimmed and loaded them. I guess they worked out just fine. Long time since we've been able to shoot those though. At least pre '98.

There were BD44 and BD42(H) rifles imported by Marstar and a friend of mine converted a k98 to Kurtz.

I remember at one of the MG shoots one of the guys having missfeed after missfeed with some handloads made from .308 or 8x57 cases.

That won't be the one that was up there though, most of the cases were way over to the right almost at the edge of the shrubs. A good ten feet... Yes, they were around some time ago. The k98 would be fun.

There was an ill-fated attempt years ago to convert the M1 carbine to fire the 30 cal Kurz cartridge. Believe it was around the late 60's or early 70's ? Anyway it used a new longer barrel and modified slide, bolt face opened-up too. The 30 Kurz would fit in the carbine magazine using 110 gr bullets.

Could not generate any following and it was just too unsafe.

I made several hundred in the good old days and used a bunch of DA 65 7.62 brass I had.
THAT WAS WORK!!!
The old DA brass was about as thick as a bank vault door and I had to ream the necks on all of them
I was lucky to get two loadings out of them before they split
The commercial Winchester and Remington brass was about 15 % lighter and made great cases that did not split....until they pulled the plug on us.

The scale cartridge is rimless, 22 (K) Hornet is a rimmed case.

I suspect it is a (Melvin Johnson) MMJ .223 ? Based on .30 Carbine which is in the similar length (33mm) to 7.92 Kurtz.

I did 600 I think and they were commercial Federals, same procedure. I never got the feedback on them.
