Smoke or WP grenade on the closer man?
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

I know personally two vets who said they taped the grip safety down on the 1911 when in combat. I'll bet this is that.

I know the caption says otherwise - but could it be some kind of flare gun shoved in the holster? Or a personal weapon of another model? Does not look like a 1911 at all. What looks like it would be the magazine has rounded sides.

I doubt it's a flare gun as you know how fat they are and a revolver grip has an arch. Here's close enough that you can see the frog on the piece of rifle sling he's using for a pistol belt.
