Interesting that the exposed wood almost looks charred.
Is that how it looks in person?
Could be an interesting story there.....

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. I'll be honest when I got my first carbine at age 18 a $175 Postal Meter/Blue Sky junk re-park over pitting,no muzzle left at all, bolt slam shut when ever it felt the need= worn out hole in the receiver. Anyhow it had a I-Cut IO stock cut down to low wood, with visible cartouches, I did the same thing to the sling well, it had a heavy coat of varnish and I was bound and determined to get that D-tip sling past the oiler. Live and learn.

    My bad.

I think I'll contact Rick and see what he says.
