Garand with Marlin Barrel

Picked up a Garand the other day from a private owner. Typical Post War 58 Mil Springfield mixmaster with the exception of a Marlin Barrel with a MW of less than 1. Barrel is stamped under the handguard


Stripped her down for a clean and inspection and found that someone had punched the barrel on three sides under the lower band. Anyone ever seen anything like this before?


Nothing on the stock except for a W or a M on the heel of the grip. Any ideas what it stands for?


Got her cleaned up and put back together, should make a good shooter

Nice clean rifle! With a MW of 1 that barrel should give you excellent on target results. I've no idea what the M/W might mean. Hopefully someone else will know. Sincerely. BruceV.

I've had several marlin barrels over the years,most have been excellent shooters. I'm down to only one now,it's on a 2.3 WRA "grenade rifle". Its a tackdriver,measures 1 on each end.

I have a Marlin barrel on a Springfield the DCM sent me. I don't have the tools to measure it but it shoots good.
The W looks like an inspectors stamp.

The punch marks on the barrel is to tighten up the fit between the middle band and the barrel. It's a bad fix. I think it's a lot easier to get a new middle band.

Nice to see other Marlins out there. I got one on a CMP SG 6 digit s/n. It is also a good shooter!! Have fun ;-)

It's SOP on a match build with GI parts, as is peening the middle band itself. The diameter of the barrel at that point was not well-controlled. A new middle band is just as likely to be loose as the last one you tried. The fit at that point in a commercial match build (like a McCoy) is controlled by turning that point on the barrel slightly oversize. You don't have that luxury with a GI barrel.
