M1903 Bayonet Query

I've decided to add a bayonet w/sheath to my 1930-built Springfield M1903, but have no idea which sheath is proper f/my rifle. I'm getting the WWI-type blade, but there seem to be @ least 2 sheaths f/it, the leather covered M1905(I think?), & the canvas covered M1910. Which would have been the more likely to have been original issue in 1930, or is there another choice? Thanks much in advance f/your input, folks.

Assuming that the rifle is "original" from 1930 (and does't have any WWII parts, the scabbard with the canvas material (M1910) would be the first choice. The leather variation was still seen occasionally before WWII, but was much rarer.

If the rifle has been rebuilt in WWII, you could use a later 1942-type scabbard, as well.

Canvas is cheaper and what you want. Have you started looking around at prices? Neither is cheap.

Which ever you decide, M1905/M1910, there is an alternative to paying thru the teeth for an "original" sheath. The one's I've seen in good condition are gonna run you a couple hundred.

Okay, IMA it is folks, since they're $5 cheaper! Once again, thanks to all who responded. Since my bayonet will be a repro (probably made of recycled beer cans), the repro sheath will do just fine. Yes, I'd love to have an original bayo & sheath, but not f/a price close to what I paid f/the '03 rifle itself. That would be what we Texans call putting a $100 saddle on a $50 horse :-)

I think I'd rather keep a close eye out until something "real" came along. What is your budget for a bayonet? There are some good deals if you keep a weather eye out - especially on less than perfect examples.

Rick- I appreciate your advice re watching f/a "real" bayonet & sheath, but I'm retired & just can't afford the "McCoy" in good shape. I can, however, swing the price of a repro bayo & sheath which will pass muster, @ least w/me. I'm sorry to say that I own too many old military rifles & pistols to be able to provide them all w/the original accessories they so richly deserve. One example:my VERY nice post WWII Swiss K31 rifle rig which lacks only a bayonet because, f/reasons I don't understand, the bayo costs 2/3s the price of the rifle. Go figure.

I'm retired as well and I can understand your feeling. You might think of looking for a "real" bayonet and settle for a repo scabbard from What Price Glory. I've seen some decent blades on GB lately, if you don't want perfect condition.

Yes, bayonet prices have gone into the stratosphere, although with eveything else.
