The Red Star Remington Model 1903 Rifles

After several months of work and gathering information, I had an article published in the most recent July-August issue of "Man at Arms" magazine on the Red Star Remington Model 1903 rifles.

Through interviews, gathering documents, and original sources, I came up with what I hope will be the definitive story of these wonderful rifles. The story starts with describing the somewhat unusual circumstances by which they were imported, and later found their way into collections all over the United States. I describe the recent opening of two crates of these rifles which had not seen the light of day since they were packed in England over 53 years ago. The article is profusely illustrated with almost two dozen original illustrations and photographs.

Copies of the July-August issue of "Man at Arms" magazine should be available at your local bookstore (Barnes & Noble, etc.) or wherever fine magazines are sold.

John did an excellent job on the article. He had fun writing it...almost as much fun as I had taking the pictures!! Saying that I felt like a kid in a candy store, photographing these magnificent rifles, is a gross understatement! As I was quoted in the article, it was more like being Howard Carter at the opening of King Tut's tomb! While I had seen my own three rifles, I saw literally dozens of these wonderful weapons. Truly, a once in a lifetime event! Just a few of the over 500 photographs I took are below.

I can't wait to get my copy. The Dallas Arms Collectors Assoc. subscribes to that publication & receives about (?) 200 copies (for it's members) each time it is published. We should get ours at our July meeting.

Is the fibrous material in the “before” photos grass that somehow got in the boxes or perhaps excelsior packing material? In the “after” pictures, it appears some rifles have the early fixed sight bases with lightening cuts & others have the later bases. Are all the rifles in a narrow s/n range and are the all Remingtons? Last, in one picture, the rifles wore slings. Were they crated that way or were the slings in one crate & added after the rifles were cleaned?
