1949 was the last year of manufacture for the Lee Enfield No.4 Mark 1 at the Royal Ordnance Factory,Fazakerley. They then switched during 1949 to making No.4 Mark 2 rifles.
Your description of 1949/No.4 Mk1 with an "F" in an open box is typical of the electropencilled markings for such a rifle. The "F" stands for Fazakerley.
Never sen a Lee Enfield with Sussex on it, but that is an English County. How about some pictures?

"Sussex" was a commercial name for lee enfields cut down into sporters. My memory isn't serving well right now, so I can't remember if it's the model with the cut down barrel or just the stock cut down. They were carried by several outfits, including Simpson Sears and Eatons as well as the Hudson's Bay and a few mail order houses.
