Marking on an Indian No. 1 Mk III*
I have an Ishapore .303 with the following mark stamped on the right side of the buttstock: the letter "D" at the 12:00 o'clock, "E" at 3 o'clock, "W" at 6:00 o'clock, and "T" at 9:00 o'clock, with the Broad Arrow symbol in the center. I can't find the meaning of this mark in any reference material (including Skennerton
).

My friend Divia has an uncle in the Indian Army----he's a General, as a matter of fact.
He went into this a couple years ago at my behest---the results:
Technical
Establishment
(W)eapon
D---inspector's initial
In light of the fact that the predecessor of this mark, the ISA mark, was also an inspection mark---Inspectorate of Small Arms---it's reasonable that this one should be the same.
Besides, I got it from a General.

After 27 years of being a US Army civilian employee I'm beginning to wonder about the intelligence of Generals.
Thanks for the information.
